The obvious consequence of booking your vacations online is that travel agents are used less and less. This gradual turn to travel websites has come about because more discounts can be found and you can book the vacation at any time of the day. Being of the old school, I still use my local travel agent and while they remain there, I will continue to do so eve though I do actually carry out research online.

The internet is ideal for this and it I amazing just how much you can learn from it; I am even able to know how much it will cost before I see my travel agent. Part of the problem is that they are often only perceived as a person who just books vacations when they are actually able to do so much more for you, like answering specific travel questions. Some countries actually charge a fee to enter and also have restrictions about what you can take in and take out which aren’t usually publicized very well and easy to miss. The internet cannot do everything for you though as it’s not designed to look after your every need and make sure you have as few problems when you travel as possible. I find the personal approach that you have with them much more pleasant and reassuring. You can book all of your flights and hotels through the internet but when it comes to complaining or trying to resolve an issue, suddenly a website cannot be of assistance whereas travel agents are there to assist you. The benefits of seeing a person was highlighted when my husband and I wanted to get married and fortunately we found a travel agent that was on exactly the right wavelength as us.

What really made the difference was the way our representative approached the whole wedding arrangements; there was an enthusiasm to the work that was quite infectious, something that I shall never forget. I’m also a fan of travel agents over using the internet because if you end up booking the vacation from hell, you have no one to blame but yourself whereas if you used a travel agency, at least you’ll have someone to complain too.
